Why is my swimming pool losing water, and when is it a leak?

By the SealCraft Iberia team · Updated June 11, 2026

Some water loss is completely normal: evaporation. On the Costa Blanca, with plenty of sun, heat and wind, a pool can lose a few millimetres of water a day in summer without anything being wrong. Only when the loss clearly exceeds that is a leak likely.

Watch for these signs: you need to top up more and more often, the water level keeps dropping even when the pump is off, or you notice damp patches, subsidence or wet edges around the pool. A simple bucket test helps distinguish evaporation from a real leak, we describe it in our article on finding pool leaks.

The most common causes are cracks in the shell, loose tiles or a worn liner, leaking pipes and fittings, and failed seals around lights, the skimmer or the inlets. A leak often starts precisely at a seam or joint.

We assess, with no obligation, where the water loss is coming from and which approach suits best. Because a seamless polyurea coating removes the joints and seams where leaks usually start, it is often a lasting solution. Feel free to request a no-obligation assessment.
